Tips on Setting New Years' Resolutions and Goals
by Pei Ying Lim on December 16, 2022
It's the season to be jolly, and also start setting your new year resolutions for the coming year. Setting new year's resolutions is easy, but following through with them is difficult. Hence, we have to ensure that the goals we set for ourselves are realistic.
Here are some things to note as you set your resolutions:
Set a specific goal
Having a specific goal will ensure you are clear about what you want to achieve. Being specific means ensuring that your goal can be measured. Including a time frame for your goal also helps. For example, instead of just "losing weight", "losing 5 kg by December 2023" is a much more specific goal.
Set smaller milestones and reward yourself
Rewarding yourself when you manage to hit smaller milestones of your big goal is important, as it helps keep you motivated. The reward can come in any form, such as rewarding yourself with a free day, a nice meal, or even a fresh set of bedding or towel. For example, for the goal of "losing 5 kg by December 2023", a milestone can be "losing 2 kg by April 2023".
Limit your resolutions
It may be tempting to set many goals you want to achieve in the new year. However, setting too many goals might end up being too overwhelming. Instead of flooding your new year's resolution list, try to limit yourself to around 3 goals. This will make tracking your goals much easier and keep you motivated.
All in all, your goals should be specific and clear enough, with smaller milestones to hit. Make sure you continue to stay motivated throughout by giving yourself rewards when you hit milestones. Lastly, goals should be limited to just a few to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
